IMC USA Newsletter HeaderMay 2024
As this newsletter reaches your inbox, the Small Business Administration is celebrating National Small Business Week (April 29 – May 4). Small businesses are the backbone of the US economy, driving innovation, job creation, and economic stability. In an ever-evolving business landscape, resilience and adaptability are key to survival. National Small Business Week brings together entrepreneurs, industry experts, and policy makers to celebrate small business success and foster collaboration. It serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting these enterprises, especially in challenging times.

Small business owners often juggle multiple responsibilities, from managing day-to-day operations to planning for long-term success. CMCs empower these entrepreneurs by providing them with the tools, resources, and expertise needed to make informed decisions and navigate complex business landscapes.

For Certified Management Consultants (CMCs), this week holds particular significance as they witness firsthand the impact of their expertise on the growth and sustainability of small businesses. Whether it’s navigating economic downturns, technological disruptions, or shifting consumer preferences, CMCs are invaluable partners in building resilient businesses.

As trusted advisors, CMCs play a pivotal role in helping small businesses navigate obstacles, optimize operations, and seize growth opportunities. CMCs bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table, offering expert guidance and strategic insights tailored to each small business’s unique needs. National Small Business Week celebrates this spirit of empowerment, recognizing the transformative impact of CMCs on small businesses’ bottom line.

There are a host of virtual events happening this week. Take some time to connect with small business owners, exchange ideas, and forge meaningful partnerships that drive mutual growth and prosperity. By providing expert guidance, strategic insights, and unwavering support, CMCs help small businesses thrive in an increasingly competitive marketplace. By leveraging networks and expertise, CMCs can amplify their impact and contribute to the collective success of small businesses nationwide.

As we commemorate National Small Business Week, let us recognize the vital partnership between CMCs and small businesses as well as the enduring impact of their collaboration on economic prosperity and innovation.

Should I or Shouldn’t I? Let Your Ethics Be Your Guide.

As management consultants, we’re faced with a myriad of decisions each day. Should I tell my client this or not? Should I bid on that project or not? Should I bill for this or not? Most of the answers are easy and obvious; others are not. So when faced with a decision that causes us to pause and think more deeply, how can we more confidently make good decisions? We can make the right ethical decisions.

When we’re doubting, even briefly, whether we should or shouldn’t do something relating to a client or project, we can always lean on IMC USA’s enforceable Code of Ethics to guide us. Should I tell my client this or not? Well, Principle 2.0 says, “I will mutually establish with my clients realistic expectations of the benefits and results of my services”, so yeah, I better tell them the odds of success are no more than 75% and not the 95% they want. Should I bill for this or not? Let’s see, Principle 9.0 states, “I will agree in advance with a client on the basis for fees and expenses and will charge fees that are reasonable and commensurate with the services delivered and the responsibility accepted.” Since these expenses are not covered in our contract, nor did we get approval from the client ahead of time, I won’t include them.

By leaning on the Code of Ethics will every decision be easy? No. Will every decision make you more money? No. However, every decision you make will help you enhance your reputation and business as a professional, ethical management consultant, whom your clients trust.
